Trends in the field - 2024 Trends Shaping the Skilled Trades Industry: Tech, Labor, and Leveling Up

The Future of Skilled Trades: Tech, Training, and Tackling the Labor Shortage

The skilled trades industry is gearing up for 2024 with three big trends: tech, labor shortages, and continuous education. Let’s break it down with a smile!

Tech Integration: Tools, Gadgets, and 70% Excitement

Skilled workers are embracing tech, with 70% excited to use new tools on the job. Digital tools are stepping in to solve communication issues, and soon, your toolbox might include apps and augmented reality—goodbye "oops" moments, hello innovation!

Incorporating these technologies into training will be essential. Virtual simulations, interactive apps, and augmented reality tools will enhance hands-on learning and provide real-world problem-solving experiences in a controlled environment. In the classroom, this means creating opportunities for students to engage with digital tools and familiarize themselves with tech that will be part of their future careers.

  • How it will change my teaching: As technology continues to evolve, my teaching will need to adapt to ensure that students are not only familiar with traditional tools but also equipped to work with new digital technologies. This means integrating apps, augmented reality, and virtual simulations into my lessons. These tools will allow my students to practice and problem-solve in ways that reflect the technology they will encounter in their careers.
  • How I'll prepare: I’ll also focus on developing my own tech skills to stay current and ensure my instruction is relevant.

Skilled Labor Shortage: The Big Empty Toolbox

With 53% of workers predicting hiring challenges and the retirement wave coming in hot, businesses are scrambling to find fresh talent. The fix? More budget for hiring and training. Bonus: Offer snacks at onboarding to sweeten the deal!

  • How it will change my teaching:  The labor shortage will require me to be even more proactive in preparing students for the workforce. I’ll focus on equipping my students with not only the technical skills but also the soft skills (like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving) that employers are increasingly seeking.
  • How I'll prepare: I'll ensure that my curriculum is aligned with industry needs, emphasizing versatility and adaptability to help students stand out in a competitive job market. Building connections with local businesses to understand their hiring needs will allow me to tailor my instruction to ensure students are job-ready.

Trainings and Certifications: Leveling Up

Good news—skilled workers are all about upskilling! Extra training and certifications are boosting confidence and making people more hireable. Think of it as leveling up in a career game—just with fewer dragons and more wiring diagrams.

  • How it will change my teaching:  As continuous learning becomes essential, I’ll embrace a "level-up" mindset in my teaching. Encouraging students to pursue certifications during their studies will increase their employability and confidence in the workforce.

Looking Ahead: 2024 and Beyond

In 2024, the skilled trades are ready for tech, tackling labor shortages, and continual learning. The future’s bright—just as long as we don’t forget the duct tape!
